Pearls Of Wisdom From The Dali Lama

Cats: Self Improvement, Time Management| No Comments »

Regardless of religious beliefs or views, it is hard to find anyone that does not find the Dali Lama reverent. Here are 15 nuggets of truth he has uttered over the years.

Regardless of when they were stated, they still apply today.

1. Anything that contradicts experience and logic should be abandoned.

2. I myself feel, and also tell other Buddhists that the question of Nirvana will come later. There is not much hurry. If in day to day life you lead a good life, honesty, with love, with compassion, with less selfishness, then automatically it will lead to Nirvana.

3. We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.

4. I pray for a more friendly, more caring, and more understanding human family on this planet. To all who dislike suffering, who cherish lasting happiness, this is my heartfelt appeal.

5. With realization of one’s own potential and self confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world.

6. If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

7. Where ignorance is our master, there is no possibility of real peace.

8. My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.

9. We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.

10. True compassion is universal in scope. It is accompanied by a feeling of responsibility.

11. Under the bright sun, many of us are gathered together with different languages, different styles of dress, even different faiths. However, all of us are the same in being humans, and we all uniquely have the thought of I, and were all the same in wanting happiness and in wanting to avoid suffering.

12. We must recognise that the suffering of one person or one nation is the suffering of humanity. That the happiness of one person or nation is the happiness of humanity.

13. For those who may not find happiness to exercise religious faith, it’s okay to remain a radical atheist, it’s absolutely an individual right, but the important thing is with a compassionate heart then no problem.

14. All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness … the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives.

15. Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

Many religious and philosophical figures are considered controversial. By accepting all religions and all views, the Dali Lama appears to transcend such concerns. Give some thought to his views above and how they might improve your life.

Basic Speed Reading Techniques

Cats: Self Improvement, Time Management| No Comments »

As you sit down to study for a big test or finally decide to consume 500 pages of encyclopedia information - imagine how convenient it would be to digest the information at a faster rate.

Speed reading is a helpful technique that allows one to complete more books, magazines, and other publications and texts than ever before. Depending on the software or other training program encountered, a variety of methods can effectively elevate the rate of reading and comprehension for any individual.

One of the most significant techniques of speed reading involves the concept of eye span, which takes into account the moment when the eyes blink as they pass over lines of text. This blinking mechanism is actually a link in the chain of comprehension and information absorption, which is later processed by the brain. It is also at this moment that an individual encounters the crossroads between reading slow and speed reading. Those who read sentences word-by-word obviously finish their materials at a slower rate. Another setback includes vocalizing every syllable.

Avoiding what is known as subvocalization (reading word-for-word) is an imperative technique associated with speed reading. It is through this process that the brain better records information when eye span and “eye blink” work together to produce the best reading results. It is important to remember that the shorter your eye span - the fewer amount of details your brain absorbs.

Many individuals learn how to expand their speed reading by widening their eye span. As they scan material, instead of capturing a couple of words before the blink of their eyes, they are able to digest lengthy phrases and in time can tackle larger chunks of information. Unfortunately, some people suffer reading setbacks when they attempt to force this technique. Speed reading is a skill that should be approached in a slow manner, which ensures better results in the end.

Where one reads becomes a great influence in speed reading success, as it is important to take advantage of the most favorable reading conditions. A dimly lit room and cramped quarters already creates barriers in reading, as uncomfortable distractions will slow down comprehension and the absorption of material. When creating an environment with appropriate lighting, plenty of leg room, and surrounding quietness, speed reading exercises are completed in a much better manner.

Another basic speed reading technique is to avoid reading passages, sentences, and words twice. Rereading causes one to fall behind in their progress, as it wastes vital time, energy, and effort. Many readers incorrectly assume that this heightens comprehension when in reality - it actually hinders improvement. Over time, the faster one efficiently speed reads, the better their comprehension will become.

When exploring the world of speed reading methods, you may also encounter one of two main approaches. The first is called Tachistoscopic Scroll Presentation (TSP) or the Eye Trainer Scroll Method, which focuses on the art of scrolling by widening eye span or learning on how to cover as many words as possible at one time. The second speed reading technique is referred to as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP), where students learn how to zero in on text from the center of their vision. This allows one to read at a more rapid pace. It is under this mode of thinking that the more centralized text is from vision - the less complicated and cumbersome reading becomes.

Paying Attention To The Umms And Ahhs

Cats: Self Improvement, Time Management| No Comments »

Language is an art. Persuasion is too. Of course, both can also be mangled. As with any art, most likely you’ll have to practice to be good with language and subsequently, persuasion.

As we gear ourselves toward persuading the affluent, using language and speaking powerfully will serve us well.

The more you read, the bigger your vocabulary.

But having a huge vocabulary is only one part of speaking well. The act of oration is an entirely different set of skills.

One of the biggest fears people face, is the fear of public speaking. And if you can get over that, the next step is having something of interest to say.

And once you get over the fear of speaking and have something to say of importance or interest, then there’s the next obstacle. . . the delivery.

My transcriptionist tells me I say ‘In other words’ a lot. I believe I do this for two reasons.

I do this in part because I want to be fully understood.

I also do this because I don’t use the filler words ‘um’ or ‘uh’ and ‘in other words’ is taking the place of that in my language patterns.

There’s a great new book out called ‘Um. . . Slips, Stumbles and Verbal Blunders and What They Mean’ by Michael Erard. One of the most interesting things I’ve read so far in ‘Um. . .’ is that this is a universal. All languages have their own version of ‘um’ (in Spain it’s ‘eh’, in France ‘euh’) and the use of this filler has been around since at least as far back as the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks.

Since the advent of television and radio ‘um’ has been thought of something we need to extinguish from usage. Instead of verbal filler, it has wrongly become an sign of a lack of verbal polish.

‘Um. . .’ starts out in the offices of the Federal News Service. This is where the transcriptionists type out the news, political speeches, etc., that is ‘of record’ and appears as closed captions for hearing impaired.

The FNS transcriptionists have style guidelines to follow when transcribing the news. Um, uh, ah, and er are never included, nor are false starts of one or two words or partial words. The exception to the rule is that policymakers are transcribed verbatim, ums, ers, ahs, slips, blunders, etc.

I couldn’t help myself. I skipped ahead and read the chapter on George W. Bush. And while it’s not as funny as ‘Bushisms’ it is quite an interesting take on perception and how people view him as a result of his “disfluencies”.

The perception of the president’s misuse of language is as polarized as the general perception of him. Some seem to think his linguistic mistakes make him more down to earth or one of the people while others point to them as further evidence of a disconnect with reality or lack of preparedness and intelligence.

No matter what you think of the man, you’ve got to admit some of his blunders have been really funny.

My suggestion this week: pay attention to the way you talk. See how many ums, uhs, false starts, stumbles, gaffes and blunders you make verbally.

Language is a critical part of persuasion and the ums, uhs, and other fillers ’say something’ to your prospect when you speak. Keep that in mind when you are persuading the affluent.

?life Is A School, You Learn Everyday?.

Cats: Self Improvement, Time Management| No Comments »

There are so many lessons every single day in your life, from the moment you were born to the day that you die. You learn from mistakes, surroundings, peers, family members and friends.

You also learn lessons from courses, schools, seminars etc.

In order to get ahead, you have to keep learning and constantly upgrade yourself. There are so many lessons out there and in our fast paced environment, time is so precious and valuable. So the big question is which lesson should I choose? ?Time is money? and we can?t afford to waste it by learning unnecessary stuffs.

When we are kids, we are constantly reminded by our parents to study hard, get a good qualification and with a good qualification, we can get a good job so that we can get a good, big salary. Big salary means a lot of money. So you can see from here, at the end of the day, the end of product is still money.

But the sad truth is, no matter how high your qualification is, we STILL have to use our precious time to work for somebody else just to earn that money. In conclusion, we exchange time for money. YOU WORK FOR MONEY.

Let?s take a short cut instead, instead of taking lessons and end up working for someone else, why don?t we use our precious time to learn how to GROW your money instead. Use the money that you have and MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU.
Given a choice, would you choose between learning to get a better qualification, so that you an get a better job and WORK TILL 65 or learn how to be your own boss, make money work for you AND RETIRE ANYTIME YOU WANT? I know I am not that dumb to choose the first one. I am tired of waking up early in the morning, being told what to do, when to take my lunch, when to go home. I want to be free. The second lesson teaches you the art of FINANCIALLY INTELIGENT. These lessons are out there and the resources are available everywhere. It depends on you, whether how bad you want it, whether you want to learn it, use the techniques, practice it, treasure it and then FIRE YOUR BOSS.

Like I say before, ?life is a school? there are so many lessons in this world nowadays. Choose a lesson that is beneficial to you in the future, that can help you have a better life with your family and love one. Choose your LESSONS WISELY.
